MONTFORT BROTHERS of St. GABRIEL - A Christian Religious Order educating and empowering the marginalized

St. Louis de Montfort lived in France during 17th century; when Europe was plunged in economic stagnation. The depression grew worse due to wars, other political problems, inclement weather cycles, poor crops, social unrest etc. Most of the population lived below the poverty line; without proper housing and means of livelihood. Despite his affluent background, Louis de Montfort opted to work with the poor; promoting their rights, enunciating the duties of the affluent society towards the poor. He established many charitable schools for the poor; educating the youth to become upright men and women.Love for God and love for the marginalized human beings were instilled in them. These schools later became instruments of social transformation in France. Instead of becoming a burden and nuisance for society, these poor were transformed into the educated mainstay of French society. Carrying the mantle of this great man, Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel have been continuing with similar mission in India, over the last 105 years. We manage over 160 educational and career orientation institutions; presently in India. Our engagement in civil society is anchored in the very principles that guided St. Louis de Montfort - that our lives must reflect hope and practical charity and that we must not only deal with the symptoms and ill-effects of social maladies but also with their roots. Proper, accessible education for the youth is the key to personal integration, emancipation and social growth!

HISTORY OF SAMPURNA
The Sampurna Montfort College located in Bangalore city and spread over an area of 4.5 acres of land on the Old Madras Road is one of the 160 educational institutions in 20 States of India managed by the Institute of the Brothers of St Gabriel which is the parent society of the Montfort College Society. The Society has been involved in academic, technical and special education in India since 1903 mostly for the poor and the rural population. Among them we have the only college in Asia for the hearing impaired and a Kannada Medium P.U and Degree college.

As many establishments were looking for trained counsellors for educational, family, and industrial settings, The Montfort College Society ventured into the area of counsellor education and training as the first such centre in India. We started a P.G.Diploma course of one-year duration in 1995, followed by M.Sc. course in 1998 in Holistic Psychological Counseling affiliated to Bangalore University, as the first University course in Psychological Counselling in India. M.Sc in Psychology was started in 2005. Montfort College also continues to be a research Centre of BU. Also started a B.Ed College in 2004.

FOUNDER
Bro. Mathew Panathanath is a visionary whose inspiring insights into the human spirit has led to the creation of Post Graduate Counseling Psychology programmes for the first time in India. His awareness and understanding of the mental health needs of the Indian society led to the establishment of Sampurna Montfort College to train professional counseling psychologists. His work has always been about integration, synthesis and holistic healing. Indian society at large has already begun to experience the fruits of his pioneering work through the yeoman service of Graduates of the College

AT PRESENT SAMPURNA MONTFORT COLLEGE (SMC) is an institute for post-graduate studies for Masters and PhD and its curricula entail teaching, evaluation, therapy, counselling and research in different sub-disciplines of psychology.

This Institute works in affiliation/collaboration with various Psychological Studies Institutes and Centres in the world. Though not long established, SMC maintains a strong foundation in scholarship and research which adapts effectively to cultural diversity and the needs of the youth. Presently, Montfort College Society houses Montfort College (MC) -an affiliate of Bangalore University- and Sampurna Institute of Advanced Studies (SIAS) -a practice school of Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) of Meghalaya- within its structure.
